finishing and mounting fine art prints

I have been asked  to explain how my platinum-palladium prints are mounted as well as packaged, because often people must already trust their instinct and/or the artist to buy online (fine prints are impossible to appreciate on a computer screen), this way you can at least have an idea of what you are actually buying. The following procedure applies to ALL my prints not only platinum (there are slight variations with Giclee prints).

After the print is made it is left to dry overnight and kept in a press for a day or two to flat. Then using watercolours and a 0000 brush as well as a scalpel it must be spotted, this process requires some time.

Time to prepare, with a Logan matcutter, the mount. In this case I am working on a 4x10" panoramic pt/pd image. I exclusively use Colourmount Museum 100% cotton board, the finest available in Europe, with a very tactile quality.

Backing board and bevel window mount are taped together with conservation neutral Ph tape.

The printed is titled, signed and numbered in pencil on the verso.

The print is then centered and corner tabbed with acid free materials.

The mounted print is almost ready. With an open mount and corners, should something happen to the mount one can easily replace it. I also use thin easy-to-tear corners and little tape: first rule in conservation framing, if a frame should fall, let the mounting materials tear rather than the print. Last reason why I use open mounts is that often collectors and galleries want to see the brush strokes or appreciate the paper. COA and protective vellum have already been prepared.

With a burnishing bone, the raised 'lip' of the board is flattened and smoothed both sides all around the mount. Since my prints are not always framed, in this way handling the mount is more pleasant to the fingers. I do the same along the window bevel.

The work is assessed one more time and, if everything is flawless, the artwork  is finally signed and numbered on the matte just below the print (X/24 or X/50 depending on the editions).

The back of the mount is also stamped (not visible just under the hand) and titled, dated and signed in ink.

Mounted print and a personalised COA are ready for wrapping....

...in polypropylene for a secure transit.

Two pieces of stiff wooden board are cut to size. The mounted print snugs nicely in a "frame" made with self-adhesive foamcore strips cut to size. This is the most secure way to ensure that the print will be in your hands in absolutely perfect conditions.

Here's the package as you will receive it, normally within 4-5 days (Europe) or 6-8 days (USA and rest of the world).
